Wellbeing and Burnout in the EI/ECSE Workforce
The Division for Early Childhood (DEC) invites applications for Co-Editors for Issue 2 of the DEC Monograph Series. This issue will focus on: Wellbeing and Burnout in the Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) Workforce
EI/ECSE professionals across roles (e.g., practitioners, administrators, service coordinators, paraprofessionals, faculty, and allied health providers) are facing increased stress, burnout, and workforce instability. This monograph will explore systemic contributors to burnout and spotlight equitable, innovative, and sustainable solutions to support workforce wellbeing.
Co-Editors will serve from approximately May 2026–October 2027, with part-time appointment options (25% or 50% of typical co-editor responsibilities).
About the DEC Monograph Series
The DEC Monograph Series provides accessible, practice-forward, equity-centered resources for individuals supporting young children with disabilities (birth–age 8) and their families.
Relaunched in 2025, the series continues DEC’s commitment to:
Elevating emerging and applied knowledge
Addressing critical field needs
Advancing equitable publishing practices
Aligning content and process with the DEC Racial Equity Point of View (RE POV)
Monograph Issue 2 Focus
Issue 2 will center on research, practice, and systems-change perspectives related to EI/ECSE workforce wellbeing and burnout. Potential topic areas include:
Systemic and organizational contributors to burnout
Policy conditions affecting workforce stability
Preparation and induction approaches that promote resilience and wellbeing
Equity considerations related to race, disability, identity, and workplace context
Family and caregiver perspectives linked to workforce challenges and wellbeing
Multidisciplinary team collaboration and shared-care models of prevention and intervention
Innovations in leadership, supervision, and workplace climate
Approaches that move beyond individual coping strategies to structural solutions

Preferred Qualifications
Applicants may bring a range of lived and professional experiences, including:
Lived disability experience
Lived experience as a family member/caregiver of a child who recently received EI/ECSE services
Current professional role supporting young children with disabilities and their families (e.g., EI/ECSE provider, educator, coach, PD/TA provider, administrator, allied health professional, faculty)
Individual and team submissions are welcome. Each applicant must submit their own letter.
DEC Membership
You do not need to be a current member to apply but you must be/become a CEC/DEC member if selected.
Successful Letters of Interest
Successful Letters of Interest will include:
A reflective explanation of your background, experiences, and identities (e.g., disability status, race, gender) and how these shape your editorial perspective
Strengths in collaboration, communication, and mentoring
Tasks you are most comfortable leading, such as:
Refining the editorial vision
Developing and sharing the Call for Articles
Recruiting authors and reviewers
Assigning and managing peer reviews
Communicating decisions with authors
Overseeing revisions and visual content
Working with the editorial fellow
Promoting the monograph post-publication
For applicants holding doctoral degrees in EI/ECSE, Special Education, or related fields, please also include:
A proposed monograph title for Issue 2 and an abbreviated Call for Articles (150 – 250 words) that represents your vision for the issue. For team submissions, the title and call may be identical across letters.
A description of scholarship, conceptual frameworks, and/or theoretical lenses that informs your approach to editing the publication.
Ideas for implementing the DEC RE POV within the monograph’s policies and practices as well as ideas for new ways to make sure the monograph addresses: equitable content, inequities in scholarship/research, diverse community engagement (e.g. in roles of authors, reviewers, readers), and more inclusive and equitable publishing experiences.
For all other applicants please also include:
A proposed monograph title for Issue 2 and an abbreviated Call for Articles (150 – 250 words) that represents your vision for the issue. For team submissions, the title and call may be identical across letters.
A description of your vision for the monograph.
Optional: You may submit your Letter of Interest as a video instead of a written document.
