Response to Separation of Children from Their Parents at the U.S. Border

DEC has signed on to a letter being circulated by the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, CLASP, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Children’s Defense Fund and others protesting the separation of children from their parents at the U.S. border. The letter was originally sent in January and signed by more than 200 organizations. Since then the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice have doubled-down on these separations and manufactured an enormous crisis. Earlier this week at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection reported that in just two weeks (May 6-May 19), the agency separated 658 children from their parents under the Attor

ACTION NEEDED TODAY Comments are due today, May 14, 2018 by 11:59 PM. DEC also opposes the proposed delay in the date children ages 3 through 5 must be included in the analysis of significant disproportionality, from July 1, 2020, to July 1, 2022. DEC strongly opposes the proposed delay of the implementation dates for the IDEA’s disproportionality regulations. Existing disproportionality is a critical issue that needs to be remedied to ensure equity in the opportunities for all children to benefit from a high

5 CENTS MAKES SENSE: A campaign for underfunded IDEA Preschool and Infant & Toddler Grants

Help DEC support the “5 Cents Makes Sense” campaign as we work with the Committee for Education Funding (CEF), a coalition of education associations that includes CEC and DEC, to provide a strong and unified voice to support an increase in the federal investment in education. Did you know the number of preschoolers, infants and toddlers with disabilities served under Part B section 619 and Part C of IDEA has significantly increased over the past 25 years while the IDEA federal allocation has decreased? That means we continue to serve more children with less funding per child, and it is time for this to change. Contact your members of Congress and tell them infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
