Call for Manuscripts: DEC Recommended Practices Monograph Series No. 8 - Transition Practices

The Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (DEC) will publish its eighth monograph in the DEC Recommended Practices Monograph Series in 2020. The topic of this monograph is transition practices. Transition refers to the events, activities, and processes associated with key changes between environments or programs during the early childhood years and the practices that support the adjustment of the child and family to the new setting. These changes can occur at various transition points: from hospital to home, into early intervention (Part C) programs, out of early intervention to community early childhood programs, into Part B/619, and to kindergarten or school-age programs. Successful transitions are associated with greater satisfaction for professionals and families, and improved adjustment and positive child outcomes. Two transition practices are included in the DEC Recommended Practices to guide practitioners in planning for and implementing successful transitions. Additional information about the practices including a glossary of terms and examples of each practice, can be found here.

For this monograph, we are interested in manuscripts that highlight innovative, evidence-based approaches to implementing the DEC Recommended Practices focused on transition. Those planning for and implementing the practices can be early intervention/early childhood special education personnel, and other personnel who participate in transition activities. Families are key participants in transitions.

We are especially interested in manuscripts that illustrate (1) the innovative use of the DEC transition practices by early intervention/early childhood special education professionals, families and personnel from multiple disciplines; (2) the implementation of linguistically and culturally appropriate transition; (3) innovative and evidence-based systemic approaches to transition; and (4) the use ongoing communication and collaboration among those who participate in transition activities to include families and practitioners. We are also interested in manuscripts that describe challenges and solutions in transition issues.

Manuscripts should be well-grounded in research and written for practitioners. Authors can use case examples or vignettes to illustrate how the transition practices that are the focus of the manuscript are implemented.

To ensure representation of the full range of the DEC Recommended Practices on transition and their application, final selection of manuscripts will be determined, in part, by the practice(s) addressed in each manuscript.

The manuscript deadline is October 26th, 2019. Recommended manuscript length is 10-15 double-spaced pages, including references. Manuscripts should be formatted using the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (http://www.apastyle.org/manual/). Manuscripts can be submitted here.

Prior to the manuscript submission, a statement of intent is encouraged. Please complete and submit a statement of intent by August 15th, 2019.

Please contact the co-editors Beth Rous (beth.rous@uky.edu), Tara McLaughlin (T.W.McLaughlin@massey.ac.nz), or Susan Sandall (ssandall@uw.edu) for additional information about the contents of the monograph and the submission process. We look forward to receiving your submission!
