Call for DEC Personnel Preparation Committee Members

The DEC Personnel Preparation Committee is recruiting up to 3 members (2 professional, 1 doctoral student).

What is the DEC Personnel Preparation Committee?

The purpose of the Personnel Preparation Committee is to work in collaboration with and under the direction of the DEC Executive Office to complete projects and initiatives associated with preservice and in-service personnel preparation. The Committee facilitates discussions and interactions with other related stakeholders (such as Council for Exceptional Children and National Association for the Education of Young Children) in the training of individuals who work with young children with disabilities and their families. The work of the Committee is completed by the Personnel Preparation Committee (PPC) as a whole or distributed across two personnel preparation strands whichever is most relevant for the task: (1) Professional Development (PD) and (2) Institutions of Higher Education (IHE).

  1. The PD strand primarily focuses on issues and strategies related to practitioners in the work force, birth-to third grade, to ensure high quality, ongoing professional learning opportunities.

  2. The IHE strand primarily focuses on issues and strategies related to promoting consistency and quality of preservice personnel preparation which includes initial and advanced preparation standards, degree programs, state certification/licensure, and accreditation.

Example activities to expect from the Personnel Preparation Committee:

  • Develops guidance for DEC on personnel preparation (both preservice and inservice), including position statements, white papers, etc.

  • Develops and/or assists with development of resources to support higher education faculty and professional development providers.

  • Disseminates relevant information to support the preparation EI/ECSE personnel through its webpages, webinars, conference presentations, manuscripts, etc.

  • Provides representation to CEC’s Knowledge and Skills Subcommittee.

  • Provides liaisons to the DECIDE, early intervention, and service coordination Communities of Practice and a liaison to the Inclusion, Equity, and Social Justice Committee.

Personnel Preparation Committee Composition

The DEC Personnel Preparation Committee consists of individuals who have demonstrated a strong commitment to personnel preparation over the years. Members may serve as liaisons to DEC Communities of Practice, serve on other committees, etc. The membership is made up of DEC members in good standing who apply to serve. Members volunteer their time and are not considered members of the DEC Executive Board.

Member Qualifications and Expectations

  • Must be a DEC member in good standing.

  • Have significant interest in topics of personnel preparation in higher education and/or professional development.

  • Willing to serve a two or three-year term with possible reappointment for professional members, and two year term for doctoral student member.

  • Attend and contribute to project work and conference calls/virtual meetings.

  • Make the necessary time commitment (approximately 8-10 hours per month).

DEC Committees

The DEC Personnel Preparation Committee functions as a necessary and significant arm of the DEC Executive Office. DEC’s Committees are officially recognized bodies of DEC members that are supported by the DEC Executive Office and are liaised by members of the DEC Executive Board. DEC Committees embrace and support the division’s formal positions and proactively participate in developing, maintaining, and evolving strategies and initiatives crucial and central to supporting DEC’s mission and ends policies.
