DEC Joins CEC in Denouncing the Federal Commission on School Safety Recommendation to Rescind School Disciplinary Guidance

The Federal Commission on School Safety released its final report on December 18, 2018 ignoring the input of thousands of students, educators, families and advocates across the nation to maintain the Obama administration school discipline guidance that was intended to help prevent the disproportionate suspension and expulsion of students of color and students with disabilities. Instead the commission recommended the recision of the guidance.

Background on this issue:

In October 2018, DEC joined CEC and over 100 other educational organizations & leaders in sending the attached letter urging the Justice Department and the Department of Education to retain this federal school discipline guidance that protects students’ civil rights and works to ensure a safe and equitable learning environment for all children and particularly those who are most vulnerable, children and youth with disabilities.
