Policy and Advocacy Team: Call for Committee Members

The DEC Policy and Advocacy Committee (P&AC) is recruiting up to 3 members for its Advocacy Team. You’re invited to take this opportunity to be an engaged and active member of DEC!

P&AC Purpose

DEC’s P&AC provides strategic direction and makes recommendations for DEC’s policy and advocacy efforts. The P&AC members work collaboratively with the DEC Executive Office, the governmental relations consultant, and the Children’s Action Network (CAN) coordinator. Together, we strive to ensure the DEC is a well-positioned and active member of relevant constituent groups. The P&AC scans emerging issues and assesses needs regarding state and federal legislative and regulatory affairs. Among other crucial activities, the P&AC provides DEC members with resources and information on various issues and policies and works with CAN to support advocacy efforts that are aligned with DEC’s mission and ends policies.

P&AC Composition

The DEC P&AC structure consists of the Leadership Team, Policy Writing Team, and Advocacy Team. Individuals who assume leadership roles (i.e., committee chair, policy writing team leader, or advocacy team leader) within the P&AC structure ordinarily have experience as committee members. The P&AC membership is made up of DEC members in good standing who apply to serve. P&AC members volunteer their time and are not considered members of the DEC Executive Board.

P&AC Member Qualifications and Expectations

  • Must be a DEC member in good standing

  • Have significant interest in state or federal legislative policy and advocacy

  • Willing to serve a three-year term with possible reappointment

  • Be able to respond to queries promptly and provide input

  • Attend and contribute to monthly P&AC and team conference calls

  • Make the necessary time commitment (approximately 6 hours per month)

DEC Committees

The DEC P&AC functions as a necessary and significant arm of the DEC Executive Office. DEC’s Committees are officially recognized bodies of DEC members that are supported by the DEC Executive Office and are liaised by members of the DEC Executive Board. DEC Committees embrace and support the division’s formal positions and proactively participate in developing, maintaining, and evolving strategies and initiatives crucial and central to supporting DEC’s mission and ends policies.
