Call for Manuscripts: Young Exceptional Children Monograph Series - Using DEC Family Practices with

The Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (DEC) will be publishing its 17th monograph in the Young Exceptional Children Monograph Series in 2018 concentrating on maltreatment, trauma, poverty, and toxic stress.

For this monograph, we invite manuscripts that demonstrate innovative use of practices to prevent, intervene, or reduce the impacts of maltreatment, trauma, poverty, and toxic stress for young children with disabilities and their families. This monograph will extend the awareness and application of the DEC position statement on maltreatment, which was published in October of 2016.

We are seeking practitioner focused manuscripts that are well grounded in research and illustrate the nuances of supporting children and families who have been impacted by maltreatment, trauma, poverty, or toxic stress. We also are interested in manuscripts focused on professional development approaches and practices that prepare, support, and guide early childhood special education (ECSE) professionals in this work. Additionally, at least one DEC Recommended Practice should be clearly targeted and woven into the manuscript. Final decisions will be made, in part, to assure representation of the DEC position statement on maltreatment and the DEC Recommended Practices.

Suggestions include manuscripts that utilize strategies to:

  • Address physical (e.g., abuse, neglect, etc.) and environmental trauma (e.g., tornados, hurricanes, war, etc.)

  • Adopt a trauma informed focus in ECSE classrooms, programs, and systems

  • Enhance parent training programs for foster and biological families

  • Foster self-reflection and self-care strategies for ECSE professionals

Submission Deadline is July 1, 2017. Manuscripts should be 10-12 pages including references.

Please contact the co-editors Catherine Corr (Catherine.Corr@vanderbilt.edu) and Deserai Miller (millerde@illinois.edu) with any questions. We look forward to receiving your submissions!
