Manuscript Submissions Due: March 31, 2023
Naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBIs) are a newer class of interventions designed to improve social communication, cognitive, and adaptive skills in young children. They involve a purposeful integration of developmental principles and applied behavior analysis (ABA) and share the following core components: (a) implementation in natural settings and daily routines, (b) the presentation of learning opportunities that follow the child’s lead or interests, (c) the use of natural reward contingencies, (d) the application of behavioral strategies to teach developmentally appropriate and prerequisite skills, and (e) an emphasis on the child’s social engagement within the learning context (Schreibman et al., 2015). A growing body of research supports NDBIs as an evidence-based practice for young children with and at high likelihood of developing autism. However, NDBI or similar approaches can also promote development in children with other environmental and developmental challenges. We invite manuscripts for this special issue that can extend the research on NDBIs for young children with developmental disabilities, delays, or those at risk for developmental delays. As a general guideline, JEI defines ‘young children’ as those eight years or younger. All original research that informs the use of NDBIs within early intervention is welcome. Priority will be given to empirical work, and we will
consider a range of methodological approaches. Potential topic areas could include:
• Efficacy or effectiveness of NDBI for children with developmental disabilities beyond autism
• Novel applications of NDBIs (e.g., group models, telehealth delivery)
• Active ingredients and mechanism of effect of NDBIs
• Use of NDBIs with underrepresented groups or cultural adaptations.
• Community dissemination or implementation of NDBIs
• Community perspectives of the social validity of NDBIs.
Conceptual papers may also be considered.
