Call for Manuscripts: DEC Recommended Practices Monograph Series – Instructional Practices: Effecti

The Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children (DEC) will publish its fourth monograph in the DEC Recommended Practices Monograph Series in 2018. The topic of this monograph is instructional practices. Instructional practices are a cornerstone of early intervention and early childhood special education.

For this monograph, we are interested in manuscripts that highlight innovative and evidence-based approaches to implementing the DEC Recommended Practices focused on instruction. Those implementing the instructional practices can be teachers, therapists, family members, or other personnel who are supporting the learning of young children from birth to 5-years-of-age who have or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Consistent with the organization of the DEC Recommended Practices focused on instruction, manuscripts that illustrate the use of intentional and systematic strategies to determine what to teach, when and where to teach, how to teach, how to evaluate the effects of teaching, and how to support and evaluate the quality of instructional practices implemented by others are particularly encouraged. We are especially interested in manuscripts that demonstrate innovative use of the DEC instructional practices to (1) provide instruction to young children with disabilities who also are dual language learners; (2) coach primary caregivers or other adults to facilitate positive adult-child interaction or instruction designed to promote child learning and development; (3) conduct functional assessments and identify appropriate prevention, promotion, and intervention strategies to prevent and address challenging behavior; (4) embed instruction in inclusive or natural environments; and (5) gather and use data to inform decisions about individualized instruction.

Manuscripts should be well-grounded in research and written for practitioners. Authors can use case examples or vignettes to illustrate how the instructional practice(s) that are the focus of the manuscript are implemented in inclusive or natural environments. At least one instructional practice should be clearly targeted and woven into the manuscript.

Final selection of manuscripts will be determined, in part, by the practice(s) addressed in each manuscript to ensure representation of a range of the DEC Recommended Practices focused on instruction.

The manuscript submission deadline is September 1, 2017.

Recommended manuscript length is 10-15 double-spaced pages, including references. Manuscripts should be formatted using the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (http://www.apastyle.org/manual/)
