DEC Recommended Practices Monograph Series No. 2: Environment

Promoting meaningful access, participation, and inclusion

Environment is an essential area of attention for practitioners who support young children with disabilities and their families. Decisions about the environment impact the quality of care and education for young children with disabilities showing measurable influence on expected outcomes. Environment impacts true access, quality participation, and full inclusion. Articles in this monograph feature a variety of environments and multiple perspectives on what is and what is possible. The monograph includes information on assistive technology, UDL, representation of disability in the environment, and more. The influence of the environment on the health and development of children with or at risk for disabilities cannot be overstated. We hope that practitioners, families, caregivers, professional development providers, and educators alike will use the information in these articles on the Environment recommended practices to help guide decisions about the environment in their worlds, particularly as they affect a child’s ability to access and participate in all learning experiences.
