Message from the WDEC President:

Happy New Year 2017!!

It is my hope that 2017 will be an excellent year of service, advocacy, and personal fulfillment. While individual people approach life in many unique ways, most squirm when we consider the ideas of NEW things or the process of CHANGE. Many say “I like change, I just don’t like the process of change.” This is true because CHANGE and NEW things generally bring challenge, adjustment, and sometimes cause a whole storm of additional NEW things and further CHANGE. As we begin a season of CHANGE and NEW initiatives and leaders, let us remember why we do what we do, rather than focus on the sometimes unpleasant process of change. By doing what matters, we change the world in a positive way.

The families in Wisconsin need our support and advocacy. The children need high-quality care and experiences that will promote positive social relationships, new knowledge and skills, and acquire skills and supports needed to be able to be more independent and engaged in their natural environments. Our colleagues need positive collaboration efforts and a safe place to carry out their work. We are the ones that can help all of these needs to be met with care and compassion. Hallmark, after over 100 years of advertising using the tagline “When you care enough to send the very best…” has begun a new branding process that I believe encapsulates who we are and what we do as early childhood special and regular educators, child care providers, and support teams.

Hallmark says “When you care enough to lend a hand, make a difference, lift a spirit, or speak up, you can change the world!!”   http://explore.hallmark.com/careenough/

I hope you find inspiration and encouragement in the following re-phrased Hallmark statements.

As individual members of the Wisconsin Division of Early Childhood you can change our world because:

When you care enough to Lend a Hand to families and children with delays and disabilities you can change the world

When you care enough to Speak Up for the rights of young children and service providers of early intervention and special education services you can change the world

When you care enough to Make a Difference by being the very best teacher, service provider, advocate, and person that you be, you can change the world

When you care enough to Lift a Spirit of colleagues, family members, support staff, and children who are having a rough time, and you can change the world

So, while we will be heading into a lot of NEW and CHANGING expectations and experiences over the course of 2017, I encourage you to care enough to change the world instead of letting external CHANGE processes make changes in us.
