CEC/DEC Collaborative Webinar: Differentiating Curriculum and Instruction in PreK and K Programs
The webinar will focus on curriculum differentiation for preschoolers and Kindergarteners, to achieve quality Tier One instruction. Differentiation is conceptualized as creating multiple and varied learning opportunities within the same activity and/or routine. Strategies to help providers expect and allow children to participate and engage with materials in varied and different ways will be discussed. Overall, a curriculum framework approach with multiple tiers is highlighted, which represents the underlying foundation of all practices and from which supports and services are differentiated to meet the differing needs of children. The webinar will provide a range of content and is geared toward professionals in several areas: those who provide direct services to young children (e.g., teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals); administrators of PreK and K programs; and teacher educators and preservice teachers interested in working with young children with diverse abilities.
Kristie Pretti-Frontczak and Mary Ruth Coleman will present.
Participants will be able to:
· Define curriculum differentiation as it applies to serving young children (i.e., preschooler and Kindergarteners) with diverse abilities.
· Generate specific strategies for ensuring children participate and engage with materials in varied and different ways across daily activities and routines.
· Compare current practices with a recommended multi-tiered approach to instruction where supports and services are differentiated to meet the needs of children with differing abilities.
Presenter information:
Dr. Kristie Pretti-Frontczak is a Professor of Early Childhood Intervention in the School of Lifespan Development and Educational Sciences at Kent State University, where she directs the Early Childhood Intervention Specialist Program. Dr. Pretti-Frontczak frequently provides training and technical assistance to programs interested in the Assessment, Evaluation and Programming System (AEPS), Activity-Based Intervention (ABI), and creating legally defensible and meaningful individualized education plans (IEPs). Most recently her work has centered on blending practices into a curriculum framework, a tiered model of quality instruction. A curriculum framework represents the underlying support or foundation from which all practices related to promoting children???s growth and development are identified, implemented, and evaluated. In general, her lines of research center on using authentic assessment practices for planning and revising instruction and on the link among assessment, individualized goals, and quality curriculum.
Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman is a Senior Scientist at the FPG Child Development Institute, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She directs Project U-STAR~PLUS (Using Science, Talents and Abilities to Recognize Students – Promoting Learning in Underrepresented Students). Her projects have included: ACCESS (Achievement in Content and Curriculum for Every Student’s Success), a National Significance Project funded by OSEP, and applications of RTI for young children through the Recognition & Response Project, sponsored by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation. Dr. Coleman has numerous publications, including the 13th Edition of the seminal textbook, “Educating Exceptional Children,” by Samuel A. Kirk, James J. Gallagher, Mary Ruth Coleman, and Nicholas J. Anastasiow (2010). She has served three terms (nine years) on the Board of Directors for the Association for Gifted (TAG), one of which she was President; three terms (nine years) on the Board of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC); and two terms (six years) on the Board of Directors for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
