 Activities

1. To advance governmental policies that promote evidenced based practices for infants, young children and families.

1.1 Promote federal policies and legislation that reflect DEC’s mission and Recommended Practices.

1.2 Promote the DEC Recommended Practices among Subdivisions and assist them in using these practices in their advocacy and professional development efforts (e.g., to inform and improve personnel standards).

2. To increase the competence and confidence of the early childhood workforce who provides services for children (birth through age 8) who have or are at risk for disabilities and their families.

2.1 Create new marketing/dissemination strategies for the DEC Recommended Practices.

2.2 Create a matrix to show alignment of DEC Recommended Practices with professional standards, quality frameworks (e.g., early learning standards, program quality criteria).

3. To promote positive outcomes for children with disabilities and their families by (a) defining evidence-based practices, (b) developing sound decision making processes, and (c) disseminating this information.

3.1 Determine whether and how DEC Recommended Practices need to be updated.

3.2 Develop additional DEC Recommended Practices resources in multiple formats for multiple audiences.

4. To offer members opportunities to become knowledgeable leaders through a professional organization that provides cutting edge information on research-based practices and a variety of mechanisms to contribute and collaborate at the National and state subdivision level with like-minded individuals who advocate for families and young children with special needs. 4.1 Develop a plan for improved membership recruitment and retention strategies that include benefits related to the DEC Recommended Practices products and resources.
5. To re-organize DEC’s Governance in order to create a more efficient structure that aligns with DEC’s mission and can quickly respond to issues of interest to our members and can effectively position our organization for continued leadership. 5.1 Conduct a thorough analysis of the existing governance board structure and use the findings to recommend a reorganization of the current structure and a clarification of the roles of elected and appointment board members and the governmental/advocacy consultant.
